The hibiscus flower being worn in this head bust is the type that is traditionally worn by Polynesian, Tahitian, and Hawaiian girls. When the flower is worn behind the left ear it means the woman is relationship or married, and when the flower is worn on the right, she is unattached and single and therefore available to b in a new relationship. Needless to say the hibiscus is Hawaii's state flower and can be found all over the Islands.

This Lego of Japan head bust follows a long history of the making of head busts. Historical Information of the Lego of Japan Company

If you are wondering why you cannot find any historical information of the Lego of Japan Ceramic and China Company it is because they companies name was for the most part stolen by the more popular Lego children's blocks company. The work of the Japanese village potters was revived at the Lego Company of Japan in the late 1940s after World War Two. It was at Lego of Japan that a new generation of ceramic artists studied new and traditional glazing forms and techniques to preserve and create a new age of native wares and marketable art forms such as this Hawaiian girl head bust. This type of craft was in danger of disappearing for the cultural history of Japan in the early years after the war. Thankfully companies like Lego had the foresight to market this new found creativity and channel it into the world market place.

There was Great Demand for Exotic Head Busts in the 1960s

This change to a consumer based manufacturer tended to be continued without alteration throughout the 1960s for the Lego of Japan Company. It was during the 1950s that Lego of Japan started to feature the heads or busts of persons from different parts of the world, and they were usually of beautiful women from exotic lands. With the sudden growth of the Japanese export economy following the end of World War II there was great demand for the more exotic, or should I say beautiful tropical head busts such as the Hawaiian Girl in this article. This new market created a new and more creative head bust to be manufactured and new competition from other Japanese firms like Napco, Enesco, Ucagco, and Casco soon joined the rush to be number one in the head bust business.

Lego of Japan Ceramic Company was located in Tokyo Japan

The first and main factory of the Lego of Japan Ceramic and Porcelain Company was in Tokyo Japan, they started producing fine china and porcelain in the year 1901, and only closed down during the last two years of World War Two. The factory and the main administration office center was totally destroyed in the firebombing raids of Tokyo during World War Two. The Lego Ceramic plant was rebuilt after the war, and was very modern and attracted many talented employees. They hired some of the best artist and sculptures known in Japan during the years after the war to produce some of the most amazing head bust, and figurines for the world market. Tragically the plant was located on very prime real estate, and by the late 1960s the firm relocated to Taiwan, and that was the company's downfall. The quality became very poor, many of the great Japaneses artist did not stay with the Lego of Japan Company, and moved to other Japanese porcelain firms. Sadly many of the made in Taiwan items were of lower quality, and went straight to beach front gift shops for inexpensive tourist keepsakes in places like Florida, and Hawaii. Unlike the wonderful made in Japan head bust and figurines from the late 1950s and early 1960s that were sold in fine china departments in major department stores in north American and Europe.

Hello Rochelle,

No, but I did buy this one on EBay. There are two very nice ones on EBay right now, but they are wanting $99.95 for each bust. Sometimes you can find one that is priced just right. Thank you for your comment. I have been trying to find other head Bust by Lego of Japan. One I remember from my childhood was Nefertiti, I hope one day to find her, she was beautiful like this Hawaiian girl head bust.
