Liverpool FC has had a fair share of legendary goalkeepers, such as, Ray Clemence and Bruce Grobbelaar, however, those were the football league days. In this article, we look at the great goalkeepers Liverpool have signed since the inception of the Premier League.

Disclaimer: There are some goalkeepers in this list which I DO NOT have firsthand information about them since I wasn't even born when they were playing for Liverpool FC, they are, Bruce Grobbelaar, David James and Sander Westerveld. Therefore, I would like to apologize if I got the facts wrong for these players.

1) Pepe Reina

Pepe Reina, Liverpool FC Goalkeeper (2005-2012)

Signed by former manager, Rafael Benitez, Pepe Reina has been a cult favorite among Liverpool FC fans since signing from Villareal CF. Reina immediately propelled himself to the top of the goalkeeper pecking order in 2005 and was Liverpool FC's first choice goalkeeper ever since, until his loan move to Napoli in 2013.

Favorite moments: Although Reina hasn't won many trophies for Liverpool FC, but the 2008/2009 season was my favorite moment through out Reina's time in the club, adding on, the 2006 FA cup final penalty shoot-out where Reina made crucial saves to help Liverpool FC win the FA cup.

2) Alisson Becker

Alisson Becker, Liverpool FC Goalkeeper (2018 - Present)

Alisson Becker, arguably the best goalkeeper signed by Liverpool FC in the Premier League era, Alisson was signed by current manager, Jurgen Klopp for a world record fee (for a goalkeeper). Due to the price of signing Alisson, he was immediately selected to be the first-choice goalkeeper. The arrival of Alisson has given Liverpool FC the solution to the goalkeeping they have been having.

Favorite moments: Alisson was a crucial addition to Liverpool FC's Champions league and Premier league wins. My favorite moment of Alisson was the saves he made during the 2019 Champions League Semi-final second leg match against FC Barcelona.

3) Jerzy Dudek

Jerzy Dudek, Liverpool Goalkeeper (2001-2007)

It is a sin as a Liverpool FC fan not to put Jerzy Dudek in this list, Dudek was one of the "heroes of Istanbul" where he was part of the team to win the 2005 UEFA Champions League. Signed by Gerard Houllier in 2001 alongside Chris Kirkland and he is the first Polish player to play for Liverpool FC.

Favorite Moments: Using the infamous "Spaghetti Legs" created by Liverpool FC legend, Bruce Grobbelaar during the 2005 Champions League final penalty shoot-out to stop Shevchenko's spot kick and win the Champions League for Liverpool FC.

4. Sander Westerveld

Sander Westerveld, Liverpool Goalkeeper (1999-2001)

Sander Westerveld was signed by Gerard Houllier as a replacement for David James and during his short stint in Liverpool FC, Westerveld has played a huge role in Liverpool FC's 2000-2001 season which was the season Liverpool FC won the League Cup, FA Cup and Europa Cup (UEFA Cup in 2001).

Favorite moments: Westerveld was not the best goalkeeper in the world but he was indeed a key player from 1999-2001 until the arrival of Jerzy Dudek, my favorite moment goes to the treble win where he was significant in making sure Liverpool win those matches.

5) Bruce Grobbelaar

Bruce Grobbelaar, Liverpool FC Goalkeeper (1981-1994)

In case you're wondering, longtime Liverpool FC Goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar played a few games for Liverpool FC in the Premier League as well, which means, he is eligible to be part of this list. Although since the Premier League's inception, Grobbelaar was dropped to a Second-choice role behind David James, he remains a fan favorite especially during the football league days.

Favorite moment: Bruce Grobbelaar is the creator of the "Spaghetti legs" technique during the 1984 Champions league final, that technique was the game winner and European cup number 4 for Liverpool FC.

6) Simon Mignolet

Simon Mignolet, Liverpool Goalkeeper (2013-2019)

Simon Mignolet was brought in by Brendan Rodgers as a replacement for club legend, Pepe Reina. Signed from Sunderland for a reported fee of 9 million pounds. In his first few seasons, Mignolet was hailed as one of the best up and coming goalkeepers in the world and during this period, he has proven that he can take the job as Liverpool first choice.

Favorite moment: Mignolet has a pretty good record in saving penalties and has saved many through out his time at Liverpool, I believe that my favorite moment or shall I say, moments, are his penalty saves especially during the 2013/2014 season where Liverpool FC fought for the Premier League title.

7) Adrian

Adrian, Liverpool FC Goalkeeper (2019 - Present)

Adrian may not have a easy start to his time in Liverpool FC, but he is a bargain to the team. Recently, Alisson has been getting injured and when Adrian steps up to the woodwork, he does his job incredibly well. Adrian is on this list because of his previous good performances which we hope to see again.

Favorite moment: Adrian is quite new to the team, hence, the only favorite moment I've seen so far is when he had to replace Alisson during the start of the 2019/2020 Premier League season and he has done an incredible job during that time.

8) Danny Ward

Danny Ward, Liverpool FC Goalkeeper (2012-2018)

You may be wondering why Danny Ward is in this list, now, the great question of why Liverpool FC sold him is still not answered, but Danny Ward was an up and coming goalkeeper in the academy ranks and although he hasn't played many games, he was one of my favorite goalkeepers from the academy point of view.

Favorite moment: Ward didn't play much in the team aside for a few games in the league cup and 1 in the Premier League, but he's had a fair share of games for the Under 21s and the academy which helped them win games.

9) Brad Jones

Brad Jones, Liverpool FC Goalkeeper (2010-2015)

Brad Jones was signed from Middlesbrough in 2010 to be a second choice to Pepe Reina and he had to wait 2 years to get his first match when in 2012, second choice goalkeeper, Doni, was red carded during a game and Brad Jones was substituted in after. Jones was kept as the first choice for most of the time even when the other two goalkeepers came back from suspension.

Favorite moment: The match he made his debut in, saving the penalty conceded by Doni. That moment wasn't just the best for me, it was the best for him too. He celebrated the save by pointing up to the sky in dedication of his late son, Luca.

10) David James

David James during a match with Liverpool FC. David James during a match with Liverpool FC. | Source

David James, Liverpool FC Goalkeeper (1992-1999)

David James inherited the number 1 spot from Bruce Grobbelaar and was the first-choice goalkeeper throughout the 1990s. James has made many good saves throughout his time in Liverpool FC. Although the 90s was not the best time in Liverpool FC as the squad was nicknamed "spice boys" as it was said that they focused on partying more than winning, David James and team won the 1995 League Cup.

Favorite moments: If I be honest with you, I was not born yet when David James was a Liverpool FC player, therefore, based on research, I think the best moment in my opinion was the League Cup win in 1995 where James made a few good saves.

Bonus: Jose Enrique

Jose Enrique was a defender who took over the goalkeeping position after a red card for Pepe Reina, Like Jones's story, Jose Enrique was moved to the goalkeeping position after Pepe Reina's challenge which led to a Red Card. Although it was in the dying minutes of the game, Jose made sure Liverpool FC did not concede anymore goals, which is why he made it into this list.
