About Paper Dolls

Children have always loved playing with paper dolls for as long as I can remember. Compared to their plastic or fabric counterpart, paper dolls have more choices in various type of clothing, shoes, hats, and accessories. Paper dolls have numerous designs from different eras and different culture, such as Victorian England or 20th century China. The internet is virtually packed with paper dolls, you can download them for free and print them out, either the colored paper dolls or the ready-to-color ones.

Printing the paper dolls is better when you use cardstock or carton paper as it will last longer than ordinary copier paper. Even better, you can laminate them for extra durability. For the black and white uncolored dolls, color and embellish them first before laminating. Children will surely enjoy playing with their homemade high quality paper dolls.

A Few Sites For Printable Paper Dolls

Caillou Paper Dolls offers free printable paper dolls with Caillou and Rosie as their main characters. Not only the dolls, the site also has several different outfits for each character. All of them are ready to print and color as you like.

Danielle's Place of Crafts and Activities has a lot of different fun games besides black and white paper dolls which are ready for coloring. There are many different activities here that can make children busy for hours.

Funorama contains a couple of paper dolls in PDF format. You might need Adobe Acrobat Reader to print them. All of the clothing and many accessories are ready to print and color.

Jan Brett offers a slightly different take on the world of paper dolls. Most sites will tend to have human or vaguely humanoid characters as paper dolls. But in this place, you'll get hedgehog. Two of them, actually. Their names are Hedga and Hedgie. Both hedgehogs have their own outfits that can be printed out and colored to your heart's desire. To get them, just click the Activities button and scroll down to Paper Dolls. Items can be printed directly from the site or in PDF format.

Disney Family Fun also has their paper dolls in PDF format. To get to the paper dolls page, click on the Printables button. On the Printables page, type paper dolls in the search box and press enter. Scroll to "Princess Paper Dolls to Color" and click. It will lead you to a specific page where you can download the PDF file. There are also other full color paper dolls to play with here. Have fun with them.

Making Your Own Paper Dolls

To make your own paper dolls, you'll need several equipments, such as several sheets of ordinary copier paper, carton paper, glue, pencil, pen, and color pencils. For tracing the clothing designs on you doll, it will be easier if you have glass table top and flashlight. It's alright if you don't have glass table. Copier paper has enough transparency to see through the rough outline of the picture underneath.

First, draw your doll on a piece of paper with a pencil until you have the character you love. Then, trace a clean line following the penciled draft with a pen (ballpoint pen or fountain pen). Pen ink will make the lines more visible. Wait for the ink to dry. Carefully erase the pencil strokes. Now, you have your doll.

Second, place a new piece of paper on top of your paper doll. You will see the faint outline. Then trace the outline with a pencil as a base where you draw the clothing. Using the outline as guide, draw the clothing for you doll. When you are happy with the design, ink the pencil draft with a pen. Do this several times to create different kind of clothes and accessories.

Third, color your doll and the clothes and accessories you've already drawn. After you are done with the color, apply glue on the back of you drawings and stick them on carton paper to make them sturdier. Wait for the glue to dry. Then, cut the designs as precise as you can while leaving a bit of notch for the clothes to hang.

Your paper doll set is done. Or you can laminate them to make it last longer. Either way is fine.

My Paper Dolls Coloring Page - The First Set

Without further ado, here is the first paper doll set I made. The clothing design is simple and very easy to color. The whole set is made from scratch using a vector based graphic software and then refined with bitmap based software. The costume designs are mostly in the line of Disney princesses and anime magical girls, most notably Snow White and Sailor Moon (ish). Also, there is a bit of influence from EVA and Card Captor Sakura in it. Can you tell which?

You can print and color them if you like. For a larger picture, click here.

Have fun with this paper doll set!

Another Paper Doll Coloring Page - The Second Set

The theme for this second set of my paper doll coloring page is (hopefully) oriental style (sort of) with an anime/manga twist. The designs are mostly plain to encourage free style embellishment of your preference. Your creativity won't be hampered by unnecessary pattern outline.

Go crazy with this set and have fun.

Third Paper Doll Set - Sporty Look

This third set of my paper doll coloring pages is more influenced by sporty style than the more frilly first two sets. The outfits are not exactly sports uniforms, but carry the style for more active girls.

Winter Paper Doll Set - In the Spirit of Christmas

christmas paper dollschristmas paper dolls

Here is a set of winter themed paper doll design. To celebrate the holiday season, I include a Christmas-y outfit (the third one on the right). It can either be a Miss Santa costume or an elf costume, depending on the color.

Happy holidays all!

My Paper Doll Set in Full Color

Above, you see a sample of a black-and-white paper doll set ready to print and color.

Here is an example of how the full color version would look. The whole set was colored using bitmap based graphic software for vibrant hues. I attempted to use all bright tones at first, but it would be nice if I included some dark designs. And I did. The dark color makes an outfit look a lot more mature than intended. But it's alright. Think of it as a uniform. Aren't uniforms supposed to look professional and mature?

After the entire collection is fully colored, I saved it in PSD format so it will be easier to edit for the next project.

So because I'm not a professional animator, I have to use simple GIF editor to create a rough animation. With the PSD window open, I moved the outfits around and saved the images as JPEG format. Then I stacked the full set of JPEG images to create the GIF animation.

The animated GIF picture is available in larger file size but it is also virtually unuploadable (Is this even a word?) because of the sheer size. Please enjoy this simple (smaller) presentation.
